Chesterfield Orthodontics is a large Orthodontic Practice based in Derbyshire. Like all busy NHS practices, storage space is a big issue, and it was becoming more and more difficult to locate models at a moment’s notice. They needed a long-term solution for their storage and archiving problems.
They soon came across JJ Thompson’s innovative, new 3D scanning service.
‘It sounded interesting’, says Emma Kirkham, Senior Orthodontic Therapist. ‘But we wanted to see the programme before committing to digital models. It had to be easy and efficient to use, particularly when it came to retrieving models. I’m pleased to say that our reservations disappeared when we first trialled the system.’

‘Initially, the workload did increase, as we packaged up all our models and sent them to JJ Thompson to be converted. But then, the digital images were simply sent back to the practice on disc, ready to be downloaded.’
Screenshots of the models can then be taken and placed in the patient’s images file for a clinician to examine. The system works within the Dolphin Imaging and Orthotrac note-taking systems, so the models can also be assigned to the patient’s notes.
‘We use the programme for PAR scoring, and it’s made the process very quick, easy and clean. Now, there’s no pile of models waiting to be PAR’d.’
‘We’ve also sent digital models to the Dental Practice Board. The discs were simply sent with the relevant paperwork - so much easier than boxing and wrapping models up!
